Nursery wallpaper after the mobile comes down

The average nursery is a short-term room with long-term walls. Choose paper for the child who will live there at four, not the reveal at two weeks.

A themed nursery photographs well and dates on a timer. Clouds, monorepeats of a single animal, a mural of a forest that cannot survive a dresser being moved. Parents are not wrong to want a room that feels finished. They are wrong to treat the wall as a party hire.

Start with the length of stay. If this room is a nursery for 18 months and then a child's room for six years, the wall has to change category without a full strip. That usually means a grounded colour, not a cartoon ground. Pattern that still reads as pattern when the cot is gone. A wipeable or well-sealed surface at toddler height. No mural that locks the bed to one corner forever.

Kids collections exist for a reason. The better ones look like design that happens to be gentle, not a licensed character stretched across plaster. If you would not put it in a small guest room, do not put it in a child's room. You will be the guest in that room for years.

Scale next. Tiny prints go muddy on a long wall. Huge motifs crowd a 3-metre room and fight the built-in. Hold the sample at arm's length, then tape it at skirting height, which is where a standing two-year-old actually looks. Australian north light will lift contrast. If the sample already shouts, the room will shout.

West-facing nurseries need extra care with high-contrast grounds. What looks soft under a showroom LED can read harsh by late afternoon. Check the sample on the wall, not only on your phone.

Practicalities people skip. Cots move. Change tables move. The only fixture that stays is the wall. Do not run a mural through the exact centre line of a cot you will replace.

Adhesive and lining matter more than the pretty face. A good install on a sealed, lined wall will outlast a premium print on dusty plaster. Budget for prep.

You will clean the lower third. Choose a paper that can take a damp cloth, or put a washable rail, board or paint dado in the strike zone and paper above it.

If you rent, confirm what the lease allows. Some peelable papers come off clean; some do not. Photograph the wall before and after.
